The economy works best when housing is close to a person’s place of work. Businesses that employ people who live near the workplace experience lower turnover, higher productivity, and less absenteeism. Housing that is affordable but far from the workplace results in higher transportation costs, congested roadways, and increased fuel costs. Also of concern are the potential delays in emergency services that result when on-call personnel must drive 20-45 minutes to work because they cannot afford to live in the community they serve. Identifying housing development opportunities close to major employers in the Tri-Cities is a major priority for CHOICES.

Building Stronger Communities

The work being done by CHOICES, Inc. is vital to the future of the quad-cities because of the tangible social and economic impacts home ownership has on the community. It improves neighborhoods, builds wealth, encourages community involvement, and provides tax benefits. Regardless of parent education, marital status and neighborhood characteristics, children of homeowners tend to have fewer behavioral problems in school, achieve higher scholastic scores, and are less likely to become teen parents. Homeowners are more involved in volunteer and civic activities, more committed to improving private property, and maintaining public spaces. All of this translates into stronger, healthier communities.
